A Look into Florida’s History: January 24th

Florida, known as the Sunshine State, has a rich history that is steeped in the stories of the people who have called this state home over the centuries.   • In 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by the United States Congress, which banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This event marked a major step forward in the civil rights movement and it had a significant impact on the state of Florida.

These events, and many others, have shaped Florida into the unique and diverse state it is today, and they continue to inspire and influence the state’s residents and visitors alike. January 24th, in particular, holds a special place in Florida’s history, as it marks the day when the state officially became a part of the United States, the beginning of a war, the state’s decision to join the Confederacy and the passing of a federal law that banned discrimination based on certain characteristics.
