Date:

Florida, known as the Sunshine State, has a rich history that is steeped in the stories of the people who have called this state home over the centuries. January 24th is no exception, as this day has seen a number of significant events that have shaped Florida’s past and continue to influence its present and future.

  • In 1822, the United States acquired Florida from Spain through the Adams-Onís Treaty. This event marked the beginning of Florida’s history as a part of the United States and it played a major role in the development of the American South.
  • In 1836, the Dade Massacre occurred. On December 28, 1835, a group of Seminole Indians ambushed a detachment of soldiers led by Major Francis Dade. All but three of the soldiers were killed in the attack, which marked the beginning of the Second Seminole War.
  • In 1861, Florida seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America. This event was a major step towards the American Civil War, which would begin later that year.
  • In 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed by the United States Congress, which banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This event marked a major step forward in the civil rights movement and it had a significant impact on the state of Florida.

These events, and many others, have shaped Florida into the unique and diverse state it is today, and they continue to inspire and influence the state’s residents and visitors alike. January 24th, in particular, holds a special place in Florida’s history, as it marks the day when the state officially became a part of the United States, the beginning of a war, the state’s decision to join the Confederacy and the passing of a federal law that banned discrimination based on certain characteristics.
